Where the Red Fern Grows

Saddest story I have ever read.  I was completely heart broken by what happened to Billy's dogs.  This story really shows the connection you can have with a pet.  Losing something like Billy did would be extremely difficult.  Especially if the things you lost were the result of them saving your life.  I think it would be different if they dogs were old and they had a chance to do everything together their whole lives.  But their lives were cut short and they didn't get that chance.  His dad made a great point that GOD didn't think they should be separated as a family and that is why they were taken from him.  Maybe that's true.  I still believe he would have preferred to live out their lives together.  I want to know how you felt about the book.

  1. It was a great book when Billy won the contests, but it was very sad at the end when the dogs died. Wilson Rawls is great at detail, this is a very emotional masterpiece. I wish the movie was better, I do not think that any film could master what Wilson Rawls has written here. I believe that he would love to have his dogs still with him, I am glad that not everyone has to go through this type of emotional pain. This was a great book, but it was also extremely sad.

  2. I feel sad about how Billy's dogs got killed I mean they saved his life from that mountain lion the dogs knew they would get hurt or even killed but they took that risk to save Billy. When Old Dan got his stomach slashed by the lion he kept fighting until it was dead. When they were walking home Old Dan's entrails came out and he died. When Old Dan died Lil Ann didn't think there was anything to live for so she starved herself until she died.

  3. I really love this. I cant believe that billys dogs died! that was the saddest part of the book! the happiest part to me is that Billy won the contest and a other good part is when Billy gets his dogs! I don't like when the family moves to town and they leave the dogs grave back at there old house. I think that they should have took the dogs where ever they were going to live! then burry them there so billy can see the grave often.

  4. You guys may feel bad for Billy, (which you should-don't get me wrong) but think about Lil Anne! Her best friend in the whole world had just gone off and died. I mean, they did EVERYTHING together, and then her partner's just gone. It's so sad that the will to live has left Lil Anne. It's wrong to separate dogs like that. Great story

  5. I really thought that Old Dan and Little Ann didn’t deserve to die that way but, it really shows how loyal Billy’s dogs were to him. I never thought that Little Ann would die of hunger but, of loyalty Billy and Old Dan. I felt really bad for Billy, having both dogs die of loyalty but, if his father is right that God has a meaning for everything what’s the meaning of that?

  6. It was a great book and it was sad how Billy's dogs died. But they had some great times together winning the fashion show with Little Ann, and winning the trophy for catching the most coons. But I thought Little Ann, and Old Dane didn't deserve to die, but thats how the story goes with some story's. But it was a good book I think everybody in our class enjoyed it to.
